HOST: The Evanston City Council didn’t vote on a controversial climate action Monday evening. The new law would push Northwestern to reduce its carbon emissions. WNUR’s Brandon Kondritz has details.
BRANDON KONDRITZ: The healthy buildings ordinance would force 300 Evanston properties to only use renewable energy by 20-50.
Northwestern owns many of the biggest buildings covered by the law.
The university called the policy impractical in a last-minute letter before Monday’s meeting. Many public comments said the same.
So after an hour of debate…Council delayed the vote.
Northwestern student activist Ruth Debono was there. She’s hoping the city will act soon.
RUTH DEBONO: We know that with the climate crisis, it’s only a matter of time before these actions are going to have to be taken. It’s better to start now than to just keep waiting and delaying as they are.
The vote’s on the table at Council’s next meeting…Monday, February tenth.
